Using Essential Oils to Create Sacred Space

Essential oils are the liquid essence of a plant. Essential oils contain aromatic compounds that exert psychological (and biological) actions on living things. Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils for emotional (and physical) healing. Aromas, when inhaled, travel directly to the limbic part of the brain. The limbic portion of the brain is the part of the brain responsible for emotions, and subconscious thought, which is why aromas can transport us to a different time and space in our mind.

Aromatherapy is a great healing art and modality to incorporate into creating sacred spaces and “bliss corners” in your home. They can shift the energy of our space and of our minds, helping to restore our connection to self, and the divine.

Essential oils that come from flowers can be beautiful and sensuous. Floral oils are ideal for using in the bathroom or dressing room. Their beautiful aromas help make us feel beautiful. They are also ideal to use in the bedroom. A flower makes an aroma to attract birds and bees for pollination and continued survival. Floral essential oils have some of the most attractive aromas. Floral aromas like rose, ylang-ylang and jasmine are known to enhance libido.

Oils can be uplifting and energizing. Uplifting and energizing oils like citrus or mint oils, can provide inspiration reminding us of our dreams and are excellent for a enhancing a work space. Some essential oils may stimulate memory, like rosemary essential oil. Oils can also enhance spiritual rituals such as prayer and meditation and help connect us to spirit. Frankincense and sandalwood are excellent oils for divine connection. Essential oils can also be grounding, like vetiver, or calming, like lavender.

Of course, some aromas transport us back in time. Essential oils’ aromas can be associated with meaningful memories of joyful times. Create a personal “altar”, incorporating photos and mementos in order to create a sentimental experience you can return to for connection to those times or people.

There are also oils that can purify the air and these are perfect to use in room sprays as an alternative to commercial air fresheners, making your space clean and fresh.
